5 Reasons to Change Your Locks
Changing locks can make sense after a move, lost keys, worn hardware, access changes, or security upgrades.
Changing locks is not always necessary. If hardware is compatible and in good condition, rekeying may solve the access problem. Lock changes make sense when the hardware itself needs to change.
1. You just moved in
If you do not know who has old keys, reset access. Rekeying is often enough, but lock replacement may be right if the current hardware is worn or low quality.
2. Keys are missing or access has changed
When keys are unaccounted for, the priority is making those keys stop working. Ask whether rekeying or full replacement fits your doors and security needs.
3. The lock is worn out
Loose hardware, difficult key turns, sticking latches, and unreliable deadbolts are signs that repair or replacement should be considered.
4. A door needs better hardware
Some doors need a stronger deadbolt, keypad lock, commercial lever, or improved strike plate. The right choice depends on the door, frame, and how the space is used.
5. A roommate, tenant, or vendor moved out
Access should change when someone no longer needs keys. For rentals and shared spaces, keep a written record of who receives new keys after work is complete.
